The Birth of the Invitational
The annual Invitational Tournament is one of Grosse Ile Golf & Country Club’s most celebrated traditions. In 1937, seeking funds to maintain the course, Buddy Krebs and John Foley introduced the Invitational format. When the initial roster fell short, Rollo Weyand of Western Golf and Country Club recruited golfers from across the region, ensuring the event’s successful debut.
Chuck Kocsis claimed the first championship, setting the tone for a competition defined by both excellence and camaraderie. Over the decades, the Invitational has drawn some of golf’s greatest names, including Arnold Palmer, Chick Harbert, Walter Burkemo, and Frank Stranahan, cementing its reputation as a premier event.
Grosse Ile was the first club in Michigan to host an Invitational, a concept that has since been embraced nationwide. Today, the event is far more than a tournament. It is a week-long celebration of sport, friendship, and tradition, a reunion of members, and a highlight of the Club’s social calendar. Every August, the Invitational transforms the course into a stage for unforgettable moments, creating memories that endure for a lifetime.
