Grosse Ile Golf and Country Club offers young men and
women thirteen years and older an excellent work experience as caddies.
Caddies at Grosse Ile receive valuable training and a work experience
where they are expected to conduct themselves in an adult manner at all
times. In addition, they
will work outdoors, learn about golf and good sportsmanship while
earning a fair wage. Since a portion of their pay is performance based,
these young people soon learn the importance of training, reliability,
and a good work ethic.
Grosse
Ile is an active contributor and supporter of the Western Golf
Association / Evans Scholarship Foundation. Through this foundation,
caddies demonstrating high academic performance, good citizenship as
well as a good caddy record are eligible to receive four year
scholarships (room and board included) at the University of Michigan or
Michigan State University. To date, forty-eight young men and women
from Grosse Ile have been awarded scholarships. It should be mentioned,
however, that there is a financial need consideration in the
determination of eligibility.

In addition,
the members of Grosse Ile also sponsor another scholarship program
dedicated to provide tuition assistance to other worthy caddies and
employees of the club.
In
summary, the Grosse Ile Golf and Country Club offers a fine work
opportunity for young people in a healthy, safe, positive environment.

From Golf
Services:
We
would like to thank the membership for your over whelming support of
the Evans Scholarship
Program. Over the years, 53 of our
caddies have been recipients of this prestigious award. Only Grosse Ile Golf and
Country Club and one other club, throughout the United States, have the
distinction of currently having nine scholars in school. GIGCC will have 5 scholars at
MSU and 4 at U of M. We
should all be very proud of these young men and women. Please read the following letters
from our recent recipients.

Dear Grosse Ile Golf and Country Club Members,
I
am Jacob Koch and I have been a caddy at Grosse Ile Golf and Country
Club for the past three years.
On January 17, 2008 I was notified that I was a recipient of the
Chick Evans Scholarship. I
have been accepted to Michigan State University and will begin my
freshman year there this fall.
I plan on majoring in Criminal Justice.
I
would like to extend my sincere thanks to the members and Board of
Directors of the Grosse Ile Golf and Country Club. I appreciate the kindness and
generosity all of you have so kindly extended to me throughout my three
summers on this fabulous golf course.
I
would especially like to thank Golf Services Manager, Jim Coleman, for
his help, support, and guidance.
I am certain he will mentor many more caddies in the coming
years.
I
enjoy being a helpful and loyal caddy for any golfer. Once again, than you to all
members for your continued support of the caddy program at Grosse Ile
Golf and Country Club. It
gives me great pride to know than I am one of the many Evans Scholars from this
outstanding club. I look
forward to caddying for you this summer.
Sincerely,
Jacob
Koch

Dear Members, Staff, and Directors of the Grosse Ile
Golf and Country Club,
My
name is Michael Schultz and I am a caddy here at Grosse Ile Golf and
Country Club. I am
very excited to let you
know that I have received the Chick Evans Scholarship to attend the
University of Michigan in the fall. I would like to thank you for the great years
caddying at the country club and all that you do for the caddies
here. Thanks to you, I
will now be able to attend college and I am very grateful for it. My mother would also like to express her gratitude and
cannot begin to thank you enough for the opportunity you have given me.
I
would also like to say thank you to Mr. Coleman, the Golf Services
Manager, and let everyone know how hard he works to promote the country
club and the caddy program.
I greatly appreciate all that he has done for me, from guiding
me through the Evans application process, traveling to Grand Rapids to
give me support during my Scholarship interview, and also helping to
take some of the strain off that the Toll Bridge put on many caddies,
myself included, by arranging rides both to and from the Country Club
last summer. I will be
back to caddy in the spring and look forward to another great year.
Caddying
at the country club has made a huge impact on my life. It has not only introduced me
to the great game of golf but also taught me the importance of
perseverance, discipline, respect, strong work ethic, and
determination. In college,
I will work hard to make the members of the Grosse Ile Golf and Country
Club proud that I was chosen to be an Evans Scholar. Thank you once again for giving
me this opportunity to caddy at such a great country club and helping
to send me to college. See
you in the spring!
Sincerely,
Michael
Schultz
