From the President:
Dear
Fellow Member:
As we approach
the August 5 Primary Election, campaign efforts by political candidates
running for various local, state, and federal government positions will
intensify, as will reporting by the news media. Some campaign efforts you will
soon see are going to be on behalf of candidates who have an
affiliation with your Club.
I thought I would point out to you the Club members, that I am
aware of, who are running for public office. This is not intended to be an endorsement for any
particular candidate, as I will let them convince you to vote for them
through their own campaign efforts.
Running for re-election as Grosse Ile
Supervisor is member, Kurt Kobiljak. Members Lynn Iverson and John Reilly are seeking to
be elected to one of the four Grosse Ile Trustee positions, as is our
Club’s General Manager, James A. Johnson, Jr. Relatives of members running for Grosse Ile Trustee
include Erik Ranka and Pamela Frucci; Social member, Burl Adkins, is
seeking election to the State House of Representatives.
As we move toward the election dates ahead, I
hope you will remember to mark your calendars to remind yourself to
vote in this year’s very important elections.
Steve

From
the Treasurer:
To the Members,
It seems as though
Mother Nature was pretty good to us for the month of June. We have been busy in the
Banquet area, the dining rooms, the tennis courts, the pool and on the
golf course. Hopefully,
the rest of the season is blessed with good weather and member
usage. We have had a few
capital projects pop up (always seems to appear when they are unwanted
and unbudgeted). An oven
in the kitchen, a pump on the course for irrigation, etc… Management and Department Heads
are to be commended on keeping our costs in line. The influx of the Trial
memberships has been good for the club financially. Seeing all these new faces and
families using the Club has been good for the Club and hopefully these
new families enjoy their experiences at Grosse Ile Golf and Country
Club and will decide to stay and be part of this great membership. All of that being said, we are
still behind in “Membership Responsibility.” Your June statement will reflect an $85 operational
assessment. This will help
offset our shortfall in the “Responsibility” line on our budget. We are
hoping that these monthly adjustments and controlling costs (and
hopefully Mother Nature cooperating) will prevent any surprises at the
end of the year. We,
at the Board level, are trying to keep membership up-to-date with
everything that Management and the Department Heads are facing on a
daily basis. Though not
everything is perfect, we believe that the decisions made today are
helping for the longevity of this wonderful Club.

From
the General Manager:
I am
very excited to announce the return of Joe Flood as your Dining Room Manager. After spending the past year
taking care of his new baby daughter, Joe has rejoined our management
team. Joe’s main focus as
Dining Room Manager will be to ensure that we meet or exceed your
expectations at each and every dining experience here at GIGCC. Joe will work closely with
Julie and Chef to continue our efforts to improve food and beverage
operations. Please help me
in welcoming Joe back to your Club.
Chef
Dave, Julie Gronda, Joe Flood, their staff members, and I are committed
to providing you and your guests with the best food, beverages, and
service in the Detroit area.
Your feedback continues to be the most effective way for us to
know how we are doing.
Please help us serve you better by sharing your experiences with
me via e-mail at jjohnson@gigcc.com, or by using the new Quick Peaks
survey that is available on the Club’s website. We know that our efforts to
serve you may occasionally come up short of meeting your expectations,
but I assure you that we are constantly looking for ways to improve and
perfect our efforts.
Knowing when we’ve met your expectations, and when we haven’t,
helps us to improve all aspects of your enjoyment of the Club.
Recently
I had the opportunity to spend a week working with your Greens and
Grounds crew in the preparation of your golf course. I was very impressed with the
dedication and pride shown by these men and one woman to provide you
with a well-manicured golf course, lawn, landscape, and practice facilities
every day. Golf Course
Superintendent, Dan Dingman, with the help of his assistant, Todd
Probert, has assembled a team of individuals who work together very
well to make the most out of the Club’s aged golf course equipment, to
provide you a golf course that is clearly one of the best maintained
courses in the state. I
hope you are proud of what you’re seeing in your Donald Ross gem and
that you are enjoying the superb conditions. The Quick Peaks survey mentioned above also
provides you the opportunity to share your experiences with the golf
course, the pro shop, and golf services through a link on the Club’s
website.
My
congratulations to you, the membership, for your successful efforts
that have resulted in bringing in 45 potential new Class “A” members
through the Special Invitation Only Trial Membership
opportunity. Thank you for
extending invitations to your friends and colleagues to come out and
learn what golf and membership at GIGCC is all about. Please continue to help me in
welcoming the trial members listed on page 13 of the Divots, and those who
will be added to the list in the near future. Let’s all do what we can to help them with their
decision to make your Club a part of their lives long into the future.
I hope
you are enjoying the beauty that summer brings us here in southeast Michigan!

From the Links:
This past month brought us
favorable weather that has allowed you to enjoy the outdoors and spend
plenty of time out on your golf course. It has been great to see you and your guests
enjoying your wonderful Club.
As the event calendar is in full stride now, please be patient
with the Greens and Grounds staff as we complete our maintenance around
play and strive to respect the space you need for an enjoyable round.
Out on the course you will notice that the
newly seeded areas on the course have all grown in nicely and are open
for play. Please scatter
your carts and avoid these areas when possible. The turf will likely be thicker
and a bit higher than other rough areas as a result of extra fertilizer
and water used to strengthen these areas at their infant stage.
I have received many complaints this spring
from those of you who have received graphite splinters in your hands
from the aging bunker rake handles. Many rakes have already been replaced, but the
unfortunate occurrence still continues. I have made the decision to replace the remaining
rake handles on the course so this painful and embarrassing
circumstance will be eliminated.
With all the spring projects completed, we
find ourselves in what we call maintain mode. For the next two months our concentration will be to
provide the membership and guests of GIG&CC with a clean and
consistent golf course with championship-like conditions. I would like to send thanks to
everyone for the compliments and continued support that has been given
to the Greens and Grounds Staff this season. Your encouraging words and appreciation for the
conditions that we work so hard to provide are greatly appreciated and
very motivating.
I thank all of you for helping us maintain
your golf course by replacing your divots, fixing ball marks, and
raking the bunkers as you exit.
Your continued assistance will be appreciated greatly by the
Greens and Grounds Department and your fellow members.
Sincerely,
Dan Dingman,
Golf Course Superintendent
